Michigan State lost starting quarterback Payton Thorne and starting wide receiver Keon Coleman to the transfer portal this past Sunday. The Spartans already had a roster that had several questions, and two more questions: Is Noah Kim the starting quarterback? Who will be the starting 3 wide receivers? have popped up. Mel Tucker and Michigan State football should go out into the portal again and get some younger players who can potentially serve them well in 2023, but perhaps more importantly, play good football in 2024 and beyond. Seeing Thorne leave, while surprising, isn’t that big of a deal, as I would argue Noah Kim has had the better spring practice series and Thorne regressed in 2022. Losing Coleman is a different endeavor. He was MSU’s best receiver last year and with Jayden Reed being drafted, Courtney Hawkins now has a lot of new faces at the position, making Noah Kim’s job more challenging. I expect Mel Tucker to improve and stay safe through 2023, but 2024 will be a serious “prove it” year.
