MLB

Japanese baseball and Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani made a statement to the media on Monday saying that he “never bet on sports or willfully sent money to a bookmaker,” after his his longtime friend and English-language interpreter Ippei Mizuhara was alleged to have engaged in illegal gambling.

“I never bet on baseball or any other sports or asked anyone to do on my behalf,” Ohtani said through a new interpreter. He alleged that Ippei had stolen money from him to pay his gambling debts.

Ohtani said Ippei never told him about the allegations after media in South Korea had inquired. He added that he didn’t find out about the allegations until after his first game with the Dodgers, who he said had also been lied to by Ippei.
