Nick Woltemade became the 273rd different player to play for Newcastle in the Premier League.
Bremen-born Woltmade is the sixth German-born player to appear for United in the PL, after Alan Neilson (Wegburg), Dietmar Hamann (Waldsassen), Joselu (Stuttgart), Loris Karius (Biberach) and Malick Thiaw (Dusseldorf). Odysseas Vlachodimos (Stuttgart) never played in the PL.
He’s the third full German international to have donned our colours after Hamman and Thiaw.
Woltemade’s goal made him Newcastle’s 171st different scorer in the PL and the fifteenth to have netted on his debut. His goal came 32 years to the day since the first Magpie did so in the PL – Alex Mathie against Sheffield Wednesday at the same end of SJP.
Newcastle have now scored at least once in all 21 Premier League meetings with Wolves.
That’s three clean sheets in their opening four PL fixtures this season for the Magpies, something they’ve managed just twice before in that competition: 1995/96 and 2011/12.
Eddie Howe saw his side collect three points at SJP without Alexander Isak for the first time since defeating Fulham in December 2023. Away from home United’s last PL victory without the Swede was at Forest in February 2024.

Pope then denied Hee-Chan Hwang before Jacob Murphy had United’s first effort with a shot that flew past the left post.
Gomes went close with a header that squirmed past Pope’s right upright before Murphy somehow failed to hit the back of the net from in front of the goal but somehow hit Sam Johnstone.
Harvey Barnes went tumbling as he entered the box but a VAR review failed to see it as a red card or a penalty and the play continued.
Then came Woltemade’s moment as Murphy crossed to the far post and the striker planted a firm header inside the upright before deservedly taking the plaudits by the Milburn and Leazes corner flag.
It capped an excellent first performance from the tall forward who showed some good touches and awareness and instantly gelled with his new team mates.
Sandro Tonali was unlucky not to make it 2-0 just before half-time with a shot from the edge of the box that hit the inside of the post and bounced away. That had come after Murphy had a goal disallowed for Barnes being offside in the build-up.
After the break United dominated possession without creating many clear chances but as the game wore on and both sides made multiple substitutions there was a feeling that Wanderers could nick an undeserved equaliser.
Thankfully that wasn’t the case and Pope was rarely troubled before referee Chris Kavanagh blew after six added minutes.
A memorable debut then for Woltemade and a welcome three points, although the goal will live longer in the memory than the match.
The victory lifted the Magpies into the top half of the table, although Sunday’s results could change that.
