Head Coach Wes welcomed us with open arms as we connected with players and coaches about what it truly takes to grow on and off the court.
Senior DJ, averaging 17.5 PPG, sat down with us to talk about leadership, chemistry, and balancing two sports at a high level while already committed to South Dakota as a Football WR. DJ talked about how this year’s team has a stronger bond because everyone understands their role and plays for each other.
He also spoke on how sports always gave him a sense of family and chemistry, while having both his Mom and Dad in his life has helped shape him into the young man he is today. DJ kept it real about academics too — school work is not always easy, but the work still has to get done.
Head Coach Wes gave powerful insight into the team’s biggest goals this season: execution and tenacity. Being able to stay composed and perform under pressure. Coach Wes also talked about his own basketball journey, including suffering a fractured femur injury that changed his path from Division 1 basketball to the NAIA level.
Junior Joey, averaging 21.1 PPG, opened up about personal growth, discipline, and sacrificing distractions to become a better player and person. Joey shared how he used to worry about what other people thought until he realized true growth starts with how you view yourself.
From extra workouts, more shots in the gym, sacrificing time with friends, and staying disciplined in school, Joey explained how his mindset completely shifted in the 7th grade.
Joey also spoke from the heart about his father — his coach, mentor, and biggest supporter — who unfortunately passed away. Even through loss, Joey continues to hear his father’s voice pushing him to keep his body language positive, stay focused, and keep working no matter what.
This episode is much bigger than basketball.
It’s about growth, leadership, sacrifice, discipline, and becoming the best version of yourself.
