The Indianapolis Colts got another quarterback this week after Daniel Jones went down with a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.
Philip Rivers, 44, is an eight-time Pro Bowler, ranked sixth in touchdown passes, seventh in passing yards in NFL history and currently coaches high school football.
The former Athens High School star entered the NFL from North Carolina State as the fourth player picked in the 2004 draft. He’s played for the Chargers, and one previous season with the Colts before retiring.
Since then, Rivers has been the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope. In five years, he’s won 42 games and lost 16 leading the Cardinals to the playoffs three straight years with semifinal appearances the last two.
This season, St. Michael was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A for the first time. St. Michael Catholic star receiver Brody Jones has one initial thought about his high school coach returning to the NFL.
“I remember the time after a game on Monday and we were running. I looked over, and little did I know there was coach Rivers running right with us,” said Brody Jones, St. Michael Catholic football player. “I was like, ‘Dude still has it.’ It is kind of cool to think your coach is still a player just like you, and he can go and ball out.”
St. Michael athletic director and defensive coordinator Simon Cortopassi said Rivers’ return to the NFL happened quickly. But Rivers isn’t planning on leaving his current job as St. Michael’s head coach.
“It’s a unique, crazy situation, and it happened so fast. We have guys in the weight room now… They are excited, and I think they all will be watching Sunday,” said Cortopassi. “He is just trying to do what he can to help them get in the playoffs. He is trying to help them get through this four-game stretch in whatever way he can. When the season ends, he will be back to coach St. Michael Catholic.”
