At the peak of the civil rights movement and racism, five all black starters faced five all white starters in the NCAA college basketball finals.

March 19, 1966, history was made when an unknown Texas Western starting lineup, consisting entirely of African American players, took the floor verses the all white number 1 ranked Kentucky Wildcat team. Never in history had an all black lineup started in a championship game, or any college basketball game for that matter. The US was in the midst of the civil rights movement and racial hostilities were high as the two teams battled for the national championship. In the end, Texas Western upset the Wildcats who were led by a young Pat Riley. This was the first basketball championship in Texas Western’s history.
