Texas Tech Hires Clay McGuire As OL Coach
If the name sounds familiar it should
McGuire is a Texas Tech alma and appeared in 45 games at the H-Back position for the Red Raiders during the course of four seasons from 2000 to 2004.
From 2006 to 2009, he held various roles on the Tech Football staff including ST coordinator and RB coach.
McGuire was the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at East Carolina in 2010 and 2011
From 2012-2017, McGuire coached the Washington OL under Mike Leach where he coached unanimous All-American Cody O’Connell and 2019 first-round pick Andre Dillard
Was the Texas Tech offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Texas Tech, in 2018, working under head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
OL Coach at Texas State from 2019-20 (Coached 2020 Freshman All-American second teamer, Dalton Cooper)
OL Coach at USC in 2021 (The Trojan offensive line allowed the third-fewest sacks in the conference during the 2021 season.)
Returned to Washington State in 2022
RC’s Take: From an experience perspective, this is a solid hire and that’s what Texas Tech needed. Multiple stops at programs that went on to have success on the OL with McGuire as the coach.
Overall: I think it’s a step up in some regards, but not a “homerun hire” Maybe closer to a stand-up double

Another aspect of this is he is used to having to build an OL with a similar skillset to Behren Mortons at the QB spot. Think of Cam Ward at WSU and Caleb Williams at USC.
