1998 WIAA 3A State Football State Championship: Capital High School Cougars (Olympia, WA) vs. Mariner High School Marauders (Everett, WA)

The Capital Cougars made it two championships in three seasons, but it was too close to be comfortable.

With Taber Lee throwing for three touchdowns, the Cougars edged the Mariner Marauders 29-27 to capture the Washington high school Class 3A crown Friday night.

The game ended with Capital (12-1) at the Mariner 31 after Amon Gordon scored on a 3-yard run to cut the Cougars’ lead to two points with 2:01 left.

“That was a little too close for comfort,” said Capital’s Skyler Fulton. “That was the best team we’ve played all year. I’m beat up.”

The Marauders (10-3) attempted an onside kick. Capital’s Casey O’Conner fumbled the ball, but teammate Scott Barber recovered on the Mariner 44 with 1:59 to go.

The Cougars needed a first down to run out the clock and they got it on a 13-yard run by Jared Trigg to the Marauders’ 30.

Capital won the 1996 state 3A title with a 17-7 victory over West Valley of Yakima.

Lee’s third TD pass – an 87-yard play to O’Conner – gave Capital a 29-20 lead with 7:05 left after Mariner lost a critical fumble when the Marauders appeared on the way to scoring a go-ahead touchdown.

Mariner’s Darius Washington fumbled a pitchout from Teyo Johnson on third-and-six at the Capital 7 and Trigg pounced on the ball at the Cougars’ 19 with 8:19 left.

Washington scored two touchdowns for Mariner in the third quarter. His second, a 43-yard burst, cut Capital’s lead to 22-20 with 1:20 left in the period.

Gordon, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound junior fullback, rushed for 136 yards and two TDs on 23 carries. Taber was 7-for-13 for 167 and three touchdowns with two interceptions.
